New Staff Members Join Center Team

Last week we said goodbye to our friend and Center employee Jilli Etzkorn who is moving to a new role at the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium. In this behind the scenes photo you can see Jilli, on the left, “passing the hawk” to Stevie Cisek, an educator that will assume Jilli’s role, after working for us seasonally for several years. This was a training moment with one of our Animal Ambassadors, but we wanted to share as a personal tribute to both welcome Stevie and send our best wishes to Jilli.

We also added Caitlin McNuaghten (Education), Brittany Hanby (Wildlife Hospital), and Susan Bechtel (Events Coordinator) to the staff of the organization.

Recent Releases

We released these mallard ducks at the end of our first week of camp this summer. Campers got to be front row in watching the ducks waddle down the pond bank and into the water. Since they were brought into our Wildlife Hospital as orphans they can be released at any hospitable location.

Releases/Placements:

  • Blue Jay and Snapping Turtle went back to their homes after their Wildlife Hospital stays
  • Released several Eastern Gray Squirrels, songbirds, a Cooper’s Hawk and 2 Barred Owls!
  • Black Vulture admitted in February has been released after a long recovery period
  • 4 Virginia Opossums released back to Vinton County

Summer Campers

This summer we will welcome nearly 300 summer campers over the course of 8 weeks of programming. Campers spend their days interacting with our Animal Ambassadors, learning about wildlife, ecology, doing citizen-science projects, and exploring their natural world on our 20-acre Education Center.

Campers have enjoyed learning how to fish, and Mr. Craig Miller has been helpful in teaching the children how to safely fish.
