Animal Husbandry & Interpretation Internship

Learn To Care For & Teach About Wildlife

The Education Team at Ohio Wildlife Center delivers dynamic programs throughout the community to increase awareness about the value of co-existing with wildlife and importance of animal habitats in Ohio. Interns will work at the 20-acre outdoor education facility in Powell, OH to support the husbandry of more than 60 permanent Animal Ambassadors and assist with presentations to all age groups across various types of programs and events.

Essential Duties

  • Represent Ohio Wildlife Center’s passion for animal welfare and environmental stewardship in all aspects of service, including professional attitude and appearance.
  • Clean animal facilities and perform daily animal husbandry tasks for the education Animal Ambassadors.
  • Assist in planning, preparing and conducting public events, as well as native wildlife programs for school-age children and the public.
  • Contribute to special events and general operations of the Center (clerical, custodial and landscaping support).
  • Positively promote Ohio Wildlife Center events and programs, as well as SCRAM! Wildlife Control services.
  • Take initiative to perform necessary daily tasks and performs other duties as assigned.

Additional Position Information

Minimum Requirements

  • Available for at least 16 hours per week between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m.
  • Commit to a minimum of 160 hours, September 5 through December 1, 2023
  • At least 18 years of age and currently enrolled in an accredited college or university
  • Experience working with animals and/or supporting outdoor education is preferred
  • Be self-motivated and detail-oriented with a strong work ethic
  • Possess great communication skills (public speaking, written and record keeping)

Work Environment

  • Must be able to work indoors and outdoors in all weather conditions.
  • Animal care requires employees and interns to work some weekends, holidays and evenings.
  • Must be able to do work such as lifting, bending, stooping and carrying heavy objects up to 50 lbs. up and down stairs.
  • Must be comfortable with food preparation for carnivorous animals.
