Volunteers Needed for Lights Out Columbus

Calling all birders and wildlife enthusiasts!

Ohio Wildlife Center needs your help to save migratory songbirds this fall. Become a Bird Rescue Volunteer for Lights Out Columbus today!
Each year, millions of migrating birds are killed by building collisions across the U.S. When they travel across our city each migration season, many threatened or endangered species perish due to the disorienting city lights and tall buildings.

The Good News – Lights Out Columbus has been championed across our community since 2012. Together, we can create change and save migrating songbirds.

How You Can Help – Volunteer Requirements

We are looking for adults (18+ and over) to join 4-8 people teams to walk mapped routes downtown between 6 a.m. and 8 a.m. Teams will collect injured birds and log data as part of this important conservation effort.

  • Volunteer on your own, bring a friend or form a team to walk a steady pace for up to 1 hour on well-marked downtown sidewalks.
  • All skill levels welcome – you do not need to know how to identify the birds collected.

The work is very simple – volunteers walk together with flashlights and look for injured birds around buildings. A lead volunteer is designated each day to greet the group, carry supplies and coordinate the walk route.
