Hospital Patients are sent Back to the Wild at July Event

More than 75 people attended Ohio Wildlife Center’s Back to the Wild event on July 21, 2018 at the Cook Road Bonner Barn to participate in the release of wild animals that were successfully treated over the summer at the Wildlife Hospital.

Education Director Stormy Gibson supervised the release of Eastern Cottontail Rabbits, Mallard Ducks, Canada Geese, and Virginia Opossums at the 20-acre Center. The event is held annually to raise funds for the Center and highlight the animal success stories of recovery and release. Ohio Wildlife Center Board member Valerie Swiatek and her family sponsor and host the brunch and education event.

The Eastern Cottontail Rabbits were part of the spring baby boom that brought in hundreds of Eastern Cottontail babies this year to the Wildlife Hospital. Many are injured through lawnmower accidents, found by domestic pets or other wildlife. In 2017, there were 958 Eastern Cottontail Rabbits brought to the Wildlife Hospital. The Mallard Ducks released were among the dozens brought to the Wildlife Hospital in the spring and summer. Many were ducklings lost in drains, abandoned or separated from families.

The final votes on naming two new Animal Ambassador woodland box turtles were also announced, with Lewis and Clark winning the naming contest.

From January to July 2018, the Wildlife Hospital has assessed and treated 3,921 animals.
