Current Presentation Topics

Presentations run approximately 30 minutes with an opportunity for questions and include a global perspective on wildlife topics in the news and an in-depth look at the work of Ohio Wildlife Center.

The Truth about Bats

Bats have superpowers! They fly with their hands, sleep upside down, and use sound to “see” in total darkness. With more than 1,400 species on six continents, bats make up nearly one-fifth of all mammal species on Earth.
During this presentation, you’ll learn about the remarkable adaptations of the world’s bats, and the vital ecosystem services they provide that sustain our planet. Discover how the Ohio Wildlife Center rescues and rehabilitates Ohio’s bats and what you can do to support bat conservation in Ohio and beyond.

How to Love A Vulture (New for 2023!)

“A turkey vulture is a perfect creature. It is neither prey nor predator,” says Katie Fallon, author of the best-selling book VULTURE. Throughout history, vultures have been misunderstood, feared and persecuted. Many of the world’s 23 species are now endangered or critically endangered. Yet these intelligent birds that can live for decades, play crucial roles in nature. New research shows that vulture populations can even help mitigate climate change.
We’ll delve into the secret lives of vultures and discover the tremendous conservation success story of the California condor – a vulture and North America’s largest bird that was nearly extinct. We’ll get to know Ohio’s two vulture species and how we can all contribute to their survival.

Gimme Shelter: Rescue, Rehabilitation and Why It Matters

Over 8,100 injured, orphaned, displaced and ill wild animals enter the Ohio Wildlife Center Hospital each year. We are one of a global network of wildlife rescue centers and sanctuaries that care for hundreds of thousands of wild animals – victims of the illegal wildlife trade, habitat destruction, and injuries often caused by the activities of people. From chimpanzees in West Africa, to great-horned owls in Ohio, wildlife rescue and rehabilitation centers have a unique role to play in conservation, education, and in promoting peaceful coexistence with wildlife.

Living with Wildlife

Many cities and suburbs in America have more wild animals living in them than at any time in the past 150 years. Ecologist Peter Alagona, author of the new book, The Accidental Ecosystem writes, “The recent explosion of wildlife in American cities is one of the greatest ecological success stories since the dawn of conservation, but it happened largely by accident.” This is the fascinating story of how our cities and suburbs filled with wildlife and how we can share our neighborhoods, parks, and work places with a stunning array of wild creatures to the benefit of people and animals. Learn about our local resources that provide humane solutions to living peacefully with wild animals.

The Women Who Saved Birds

Ohio Wildlife Center staff and volunteers rescue and rehabilitate thousands of birds each year. We have intensive firsthand experience with the threats faced by wild birds in their Ohio habitats. More than 100 years ago, Americans came together to march, protest and organize boycotts against another threat – the fashion craze of feather hats, which nearly drove several species of birds to extinction. This is the story of how people fought and won passage of the International Migratory Bird Treaty Act – one of the oldest and most important wildlife protection laws on the books.

Presentations can be available on weekdays, evenings and weekends. Presentations are offered for a minimum donation of $100 and support the community programming of Ohio Wildlife Center.

Ohio Wildlife Center is a nonprofit organization dedicated to fostering awareness and appreciation of Ohio’s native wildlife through rehabilitation, education and wildlife health studies. We rely on donations to support our Wildlife Hospital.
