If you have found featherless, downy or incompletely feathered young bird that is uninjured, locate its nest and place the baby bird back into the nest. The parents have strong instincts and they will continue caring for it, EVEN IF YOU HAVE TOUCHED IT!
If the nest has been destroyed, a makeshift nest can be made out of a margarine tub or small container (with drainage holes poked in the bottom). Use the original nesting material or lay dry grasses inside the container. Put the young bird in the container and place the makeshift nest as close as possible to the original nest site. Birds rely on their sight and the sounds of their young to locate their nest. Spend some time observing them. If the parents do not return within 30 minutes to 1 hour, consider these birds orphaned and bring them to our hospital.
If you have found a feathered young bird on the ground that looks healthy but is unable to fly, leave it alone. These birds are called fledglings and have left the nest for good. They will live on the ground for up to 10 days while they are learning to fly. The parent birds are still feeding and caring for them during this time. If you watch, you may see the parents make their presence known by squawks or swoop attacks when you approach the young. Leave the fledgling alone, unless a neighborhood dog or cat is attacking it. It is always best for the bird to be raised by its parents, so it can be taught how to survive on its own. To deter neighborhood pets, turn on a sprinkler with it spraying away from the fledgling.
IF THE YOUNG BIRD SHOWS SIGNS OF INJURY (bleeding or having been attacked by a cat or dog), bring it IMMEDIATELY to OWC’s hospital. OWC relies on individual donations; we would greatly appreciate a monetary donation to help with the animal’s care.
Our Hospital is located at 2661 Billingsley Rd., Columbus, 43235. We are open from 9am to 6pm Monday through Friday and from 9am to 3pm on weekends
Thank you for caring about Ohio’s wildlife!
