July, 2008
In early July, city of Dublin residents were alarmed to find dozens of ill and deceased ducks at their Britton Woods apartment complex pond. Sixteen were found dead at the pond and another 16 were admitted to the Ohio Wildlife Center for intense treament.
After testing, the Ohio Department of Natural Resources determined that botulism was responsible for this unfortunate incident.
Because residents regularly feed ducks at this pond, an unusually high number of waterfowl congregate in the area and defecate. This, combined with a lower level of oxygen due to shallow conditions created an ideal bacteria-breeding ground.
Nine of the 16 ducks treated at OWC fully recovered and were released back with their families on July 25 after the environment was determined to be safe again.
